Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji has said that there is need to ensure maintenance culture towards government properties.
The government highlighted this when he inaugurated a multi-million naira digital library built by the lawmaker representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, in honour of his late principal and teacher in secondary school, the late Bishop Gabriel Babalola Oloniyo from Ilawe-Ekiti, in Ekiti Southwest local area of the state.
At the event in Ado-Ekiti, the State capital, where the digital library is located as part of the constituency projects of the lawmaker, governor Oyebanji, commended the Senator for the initiative, giving an assurance that the government will ensure that the facility is put to use as soon as possible.
He urged the youths to patronize the library underscoring that the joy is to see people use it. The governor appealed to Senator Bamidele not to limit such gesture to only his constitueny but extend it to other local government areas in the state in the interest of the people.
Senator Bamidele said he built the digital library and handed over to the state government as part of his constitueny projects aimed at empowering the youths to prepare them for tomorrow.
He pointed out that it was in line with governor Oyebanji’s request to Ekiti representatives in the National Assembly to align their vision with his.
” He gave us a list of what he considered to be the critical needs of the people. So, it is for you as a house of representatives member or senator to find where your local governments are in that list and what projects are designated by the governor as the critical needs of the people.”
According to the lawmaker who is also the Majority Leader in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, the lists range from bore-holes, solar street lights, transformer, construction of town halls, construction of medical facilities, sporting facilities and others. ” That list has become our working document. I am glad this falls within the lists and meets the needs of the people”.
He stressed that his embarking on constitueny projects has no political undertone as he is not nursing any governorship ambition for 2026.
Son of the late Bishop Oloniyo, who is a Special Adviser to governor Oyebanji on Housing, Dr Gboyega Oloniyo expressed joy that his father’s name is being immortalized. He appreciated Senator Bamidele for the honour bestowed on his father.
Dr Oloniyo remarked that the state is blessed to have the library, noting that the digital library is like imbibing reading culture with technology.” It is a library that is rare. You may not find it in most of the urban states, but we are privileged to the distinguished senator to think of bringing this type of thing to this environment and naming it after papa”.
The Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr Folake Olomobi said coming on stream of the library will meet current dire need because the existing one has become badly moribund. She described it as a gift for the youths and generation unborn.
The HOS said education is the greatest legacy anybody can give someone, urging the youths and other segments of the society to embrace reading culture.
Aside the digital library sited in Ado-Ekiti other projects were also inaugurated at Igede, Aramoko, Erijiyan, Ijero and Efon.
