The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition of “desperate politicians” lacking a coherent national agenda.

Onanuga made the remarks while responding to criticisms of the Tinubu administration by the ADC’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, during the party’s National Convention in Abuja.

Aregbesola had described the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” as a “classic scam,” prompting a swift rebuttal from the presidential aide.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Onanuga countered the claim, stating, “No, Rauf. The real scammers are the politicians inside the SPV called ADC,” accusing opposition figures of pushing distorted narratives about the government’s performance.

He further alleged that Aregbesola was echoing opposition rhetoric, including claims about economic hardship and insecurity, which he described as exaggerated.

Onanuga also criticised Aregbesola’s record in public office, pointing to his tenure as governor of Osun State, which he claimed was marked by hardship, including unpaid salaries and pensions.

He extended the criticism to Aregbesola’s time as Minister of Interior, citing challenges such as difficulties in obtaining Nigerian passports and incidents of prison breaks, including the Kuje correctional facility attack.

“It is ironic that someone who failed to secure correctional centres now seeks to lecture others on insecurity,” Onanuga said.

Defending the current administration, he acknowledged that some policy reforms had produced unintended consequences but insisted that measures had been introduced to cushion their effects, including cash transfers and support for small businesses.

He also pointed to what he described as improving economic indicators, including growth in Gross Domestic Product, stronger foreign reserves, and a rising stock market as signs of increasing investor confidence.

Onanuga maintained that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains a viable framework for national development, rejecting claims that it lacks substance.
