The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed fresh concern over the deteriorating security situation in the South-West, calling on governors in the region to take immediate and decisive action.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the group’s caucus meeting held at the residence of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure.
In the communiqué signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere described the rising wave of criminal activities in the region as alarming, warning that urgent steps must be taken to prevent further deterioration.
The group urged state governments to strengthen local security architecture, particularly the Amotekun Corps, while also enhancing surveillance mechanisms across their respective states.
It further called for increased collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta, noting that porous forest borders are being exploited by criminal elements to perpetrate attacks.
While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies, Afenifere commended the military for its sacrifices and extended condolences to families of personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The organisation also advised political actors to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the need to avoid actions that could heighten tensions.
Reiterating its longstanding position, Afenifere renewed its call for restructuring, describing it as a critical step toward addressing Nigeria’s governance and security challenges.
