The people of Kano State have been living in palpable fear over the likelihood outcome of the Supreme Court judgment in the election matter between the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and his challenger, Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna Yusuf can now go on with their normal businesses without any fear of being attacked or molested by party supporters.
Normalcy has returned to the ancient city after the news of the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed the election of Governor Abba Yusuf, filtered in and electrified the town and there was wild jubilation everywhere.
By 6 am on Friday, many shop owners had locked their shops despite assurances of protection by the State Police Command to the residents.
And also before the judgment, many of the residents of the ancient city stayed indoors, and the streets were deserted for fear of possible violent reactions to the apex court’s judgment.
Similarly, markets, shopping malls, banks, motor parks, and eateries, among other public places, remained shut, as their operators refused to open them for fear of a possible breach of peace.
However, the city became calm after the pronouncement by the Supreme Court. The NNPP supporters were peaceful while celebrating the victory of Governor Yusuf.
The news that filtered into the state that Abba Yusuf’s 160,000 votes canceled by the Election Petition Tribunal and the Appeal Court have been returned to him and that the apex court affirmed his election was a comfort to the people who had vowed never to retreat or surrender to the APC which they had overwhelmingly voted against at the last governorship election in the state.
The pronouncement by Justice John Inyang Okoro who read the lead judgment doused all tensions and a shout of victory for Abbas rented the air. The NNPP faithful trooped to the major streets of the state capital in cars and motorcycles, singing the party’s slogans to celebrate the judgment.
The shout of Sai Abba, Sai Abba” meaning, it is Abba, it is Abba we want” rented the air, with many people riding motorcycles and as well shouting ” sai Abba, sai Abba on their bikes”
When the shop owners observed that there was no trouble or violence, they reopened their shops for business.
It was observed that the tension that had enveloped the town for many months before the judgment had doused and the residents were seen exchanging banters and thanking God for the return of normalcy to the city.
The wild jubilation was spontaneous as some party supporters gathered at the Miller Road residence of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the residence of other NNPP chieftains across the state.
Speaking with Pathfinder News Reporter, the Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Haruna Ali Makoda, said that the victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Supreme Court was a clear indication that the judiciary is still the last hope of the common man.
Ali Makoda said that with apprehension now over, Governor Yusuf would now concentrate on providing good governance and executing laudable programs for the people of the state.
“This is just as both the tribunal and the Appeal Court nullified the election of Governor Yusuf but the Supreme Court reversed it.”
Alhaji Makoda added ” It is not good at all for anybody to just accept wrong defeat, when he has been cheated.
” It is now very clear that Governor Yusuf defeated the All Progressive Congress (APC)Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna Yusuf hands down but the people forced him to challenge the defeat at the tribunal ”
Though, the defeated APC’s governorship candidate ( Alhaji Gawuna) had earlier accepted defeat and congratulated Governor Yusuf some power-thirsty politicians convinced him to challenge the defeat.
They procured judgment at the Tribunal and Appeal Court but thank Allah, the dogged fighter, Governor Yusuf resolved to challenge the rulings at the Supreme Court and we thank the Almighty Allah that the apex court confirmed him( Gov Yusuf) as the authentic winner of the Match 2023 governorship election in Kano State.
Governor Yusuf, the friend of Talakawa hailed the judgment of the Supreme Court, not only for affirming him as the true winner of the election but the apex court re-wrote the wrong by pronouncing that the over 165,000 votes cast for him were authentic.
Alhaji Makoda again commended the people of the state, for their prayers, unflinching support, and solidarity for Governor Yusuf during the trial period
He assured that the true Governor would not disappoint the confidence reposed in him by the Kano State people
