IWD: Pyrates Confraternity empowers, celebrates indigent women in Ogun

As part of activities marking this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), the Ash Montana and Blizzard decks of the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity initiated an empowerment campaign project at their Gbonugu Obantoko Secretariat, Abeokuta, Ogun State, targeting indigent women within the state to benefit from the exercise.

The IWD, which was celebrated on 8th March 2024 worldwide, is perceived to be a very important stage, as it reflects on the female gender’s resilience in contributing positively to the sustainability of human existence as well as reiterating gender equality and well-being in every aspect of life.

Stakeholders, comprising the States Police Area Command, Adatan, Ogun State, the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Development, and a Gender Development Initiative lecturer, were present at the memorable occasion to encourage the invited women on the importance of the Women’s Day.

Speaking during the program, Dr. Oni Oluwakemi of the Gender Development Initiative, Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, informed the women that it was very pertinent for them to exercise their rights in any society they might find themselves and that these rights should not be hindered in any way, to be able to give their full support towards the general growth of the society.

Also, speaking, Director of Women Empowerment Services, Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development,
Mrs. Wonuola Kazeem, who represented the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, admonished the women on the need to be in their best behaviors whenever they were discharging their duties/roles in the community to achieve desired respect and honor.

In the same vein, Mrs. Mariam Afolabi Odemuyiwa of the same ministry briefed the women on their various rights and enlightened them on ways to ensure that their rights were not abused in any form.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Area Command, Adatan, Mr. Eibejiale Sunday, while speaking, commented on the role of the Police Force in ensuring and guarding the rights of women at all times.

He advised that perpetrators of abuse of women’s rights should be reported immediately to the nearest police station so that justice could be passed on to the erring person or persons.

At the end of the event, all attendees and the organizers agreed that the purpose for which the event was embarked was achieved.

Items distributed to empower the indigent women included deep freezers, grinding machines, sewing machines, and others.
