A fresh wave of crisis has engulfed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, following the emergence of a new state executive committee led by Tony Alike, deepening existing divisions within the party.
The development was confirmed by the party’s National Collation Chairman, Sem Andrew Uchendu, who represented the national secretariat during the congress that produced the new leadership.
However, the announcement has further complicated the party’s internal crisis, coming just a day after a member of the National Executive Committee, Rowland Owie, declared that Nosa Ehima had emerged as the duly elected state chairman.
Adding to the confusion, the incumbent chairman, Kennedy Odion, whose tenure is expected to expire on May 19, said he was unaware of any congress held in the state, raising questions over the legitimacy of the exercise.
Speaking earlier, Uchendu stated that he had spent three days in Edo State supervising congresses conducted across all levels—unit, ward, local government, and state—insisting that the process followed a consensus arrangement agreed upon by party stakeholders.
He noted that the exercise was carried out under the guidance of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, whom he credited with providing leadership and structure for the process.
Following the congress, Uchendu announced Alike alongside 23 other members as the newly constituted state executive of the party.
In his remarks, Alike pledged to prioritise reconciliation among aggrieved members and restore unity within the party’s Edo chapter.
“We have already begun consultations with key stakeholders and leaders of the party. Our focus is to unify the structure and move forward,” he said.
He added that the party would soon unveil its policy direction as part of preparations for future elections, stressing the need for a credible opposition to respond to growing public dissatisfaction with governance.
The latest development underscores the deepening internal wrangling within the ADC, raising concerns about its cohesion and readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
