A fresh political tension is brewing in Ekiti State as Governor Biodun Oyebanji and former senator Ayo Arise appear to be at odds over an alleged plan to impose a candidate for the Ekiti North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The controversy follows speculations that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may adopt a consensus arrangement to determine its candidates for federal legislative positions, a move some stakeholders fear could sideline other aspirants.
Speaking to journalists, Arise strongly rejected any attempt to impose a candidate, insisting that the selection process must be transparent, democratic, and inclusive.
“The options are clear—either consensus or direct primaries. It is unacceptable for anyone to assume that candidates can be handpicked through political influence,” he said.
While acknowledging that Governor Oyebanji had publicly denied involvement in any imposition plan, Arise expressed concern that some individuals were still invoking the governor’s name to push alleged agendas.
“The governor has distanced himself from it, but people are still using his name. I have made it clear that no one should attempt to impose any candidate in my senatorial district, as I am in the race,” he added.
The former lawmaker also dismissed claims that his ambition was being opposed due to alleged backing from a former governor, describing such insinuations as unfounded and misleading.
He further questioned the performance of the current representation in the district, stressing the need for accountability and warning against any move to return the incumbent through undemocratic means.
Arise cautioned that any attempt to impose a candidate could trigger political backlash, with potential implications for future elections in the state.
Under Nigeria’s Electoral Act, political parties are permitted to choose candidates through either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, provided the process is transparent and acceptable to party members.
