The Presidency and the National Secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Bashiru have disclosed that President Bola Tinubu will choose his running mate in the 2027 election only after formally accepting the party’s nomination during its convention next year.

Special Adviser to the President on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this on Thursday in an interview with Daily Trust newspaper.

Onanuga dismissed the concern that the presidency has remained silent over the omission of Vice President Kashim Shettima from a wave of endorsements for Tinubu.

According to him, the speculation of a rift between Tinubu and Shettima was baseless.

“When I read the report, I dismissed it as a nonissue. In a presidential system, the candidate emerges first and then selects a running mate. That’s what happened under Buhari – he was nominated first and later picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once.

“Once INEC releases the timetable, the party convention will be held, and if the president is nominated again, he will choose his running mate,” he said

In a similar vein, the party’s scribe, Ajibola Basiru, says President Bola Tinubu’s running mate would be decided after the party’s convention taking place next year.

Basiru made this statement on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program on Friday.

He said that Tinubu enjoyed overwhelming endorsement from party stakeholders to run for re-election in 2027 but discussions for the choice of his running mate are not on the table yet.

“As far as we are concerned, the national summit held in the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr. President based on his track record and a large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have also overwhelmingly given endorsement to Mr. President.

“The question of running mate is not yet onboard and nobody has come to say that the President has made any adverse decision as regards the present Vice President, and there is no rift between the President and his vice,” the scribe said.

Recall that last Sunday, a meeting of APC North-East stakeholders in Gombe State ended in chaos after APC Vice Chairman (North-East) Mustapha Salihu, endorsed Tinubu for re-election without mentioning Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The omission triggered protests, reportedly spearheaded by Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, who insisted that Shettima be included in the endorsement.
