Tragedy struck at The academic community of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ogun State on Wednesday was thrown into mourning when heartless suspected cultists stormed the institution, dragged out a final-year student, Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi, and killed him.
Fabiyi, a History and Diplomatic Studies student, was set to take his final paper and celebrate his birthday on the same day.
According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums, disguised as friends, stormed the examination venue around 3 pm, claiming they wanted to surprise Fabiyi for his birthday. They dragged him out of the hall, shot at him, and hit him with a brick on the head, ensuring he was dead before fleeing the scene.
The institution’s Students Union President, Bethel Olorunfunmi, confirmed the incident, stating that efforts to save Fabiyi’s life proved abortive. “It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of a tragic incident that occurred today. A fellow student was attacked on the school premises, and despite the best efforts of medical staff at the General Hospital, he sadly passed away,” Olorunfunmi said.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Ayotunde Odubela, revealed that the gang’s true intentions became apparent only when they began dragging Fabiyi towards a bushy area near the university’s technical workshop. “Everyone thought they were celebrating his birthday until he was dragged to the bushy part of the institution’s technical workshop and attacked,” Odubela said.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that the command had begun an investigation and launched raids on suspected cultists’ hideouts in the area. “Every effort is being made to ensure that all the perpetrators are apprehended,” Odutola stated.
