The Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed April 22, 2026, to hear crucial appeals arising from the lingering leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The appeals were filed by a faction of the party led by Kabiru Turaki, challenging earlier court rulings that nullified the PDP’s Ibadan National Convention held in November 2025.
A five-member panel of the apex court, headed by Lawal Garba, granted a request for accelerated hearing, citing the urgency of the matter. The court also approved a reduction in the time frame for filing legal briefs to ensure speedy determination of the case.
Counsel to the Turaki faction, Chris Uche, had urged the court to fast-track proceedings to align with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The court further directed that hearing notices be served on all parties involved, including Abdulrahman Mohammed, who was absent during the proceedings. Respondents were ordered to file their responses within five days.
One of the appeals also involves a dispute between the Turaki-led faction and former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, who had earlier challenged his exclusion from the party’s national chairmanship race.
Previous rulings by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal had invalidated the convention and restrained INEC from recognising its outcome, while also affecting control of the party’s national secretariat.
However, the Turaki faction is asking the Supreme Court to overturn those decisions, arguing that the issues are internal party matters beyond the jurisdiction of the courts.
The dispute, which began in October 2025 following a Federal High Court order halting preparations for the convention, has since deepened divisions within the PDP.
The Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision is expected to significantly shape the party’s leadership structure and political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
