Key opposition figures, alongside hundreds of their supporters, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency of Oyo State.
The development, consummated during a ceremony at the weekend, represents a significant political shift in the constituency.
Among the notable defectors was a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in the Ona-Ara Local Government Area of the state, Honourable Muslihudeen Abiodun
Adegbenla.
He is a former council chairmanship and House of Assembly aspirant.
Also among them was the chairman of the African Democratic Party (ADP) chairman in the local government, who was also the party’s House of Assembly candidate in 2023, Honourable Kazeem Akinleye.
The defectors cited the outstanding infrastructural development and impactful projects of the member representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Akin Alabi, as their motivation.
They expressed confidence in his leadership and commitment to community progress, saying they were ready to support him in taking the constituency to greater heights.
Honourable Adegbenla said: “Rep. Akin Alabi has demonstrated true leadership through his infrastructural projects and empowerment initiatives.
“It is clear that he prioritizes the welfare of the people, and I believe joining hands with him will bring more progress to our constituency.”
Also, Akinleye emphasized the need for unity in driving the development of the area.
“Politics is about service to the people. Having observed Rep. Akin Alabi’s impact, I am convinced that the APC is the right platform to bring more development to our people.
“My supporters and I are ready to contribute our quota to this great movement,” he said.
The defectors were received into the APC by its leaders, including the APC chairmen in Ona-Ara and Egbeda local government areas of Oyo State.
.
Speaking at the event, the federal lawmaker, Alabi, urged the new members to remain committed to the APC and its structure, stressing that consistency and loyalty were key in politics.
“I started as an APC member before becoming who I am today. I urge you all to stay committed to the party and its leadership.
“In legislative politics, seniority matters. A lawmaker’s ability to secure more projects and opportunities for constituents improves with experience and tenure.
“This is why lawmakers need to return for multiple terms to maximize benefits for the people,” he said
