NEMA solicits the cooperation of residents, and other stakeholders to tackle flooding in Ekiti

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has solicited the collaboration of stakeholders in tackling flood disasters in Ekiti State.

The Head of Operations, Ekiti State Office of NEMA, Mr Kofoworola Soleye, appealed for a one-day workshop on Sensitization and Public Awareness Campaign on Proper Waste and Flood Preparedness in Ado-Ekiti.

Mr. Soleye noted that Ekiti State has experienced a lot of flood disasters as a result of improper waste disposal management. He stressed the importance of responsible waste management practices. Adding that people should imbibe the culture of proper waste management.

According to him, improper waste disposal has harmful effects on the environment and human beings. Hence, stakeholders should collaborate with the Ekiti State government in evolving strategies to ensure that flood-prone areas in the state are tackled. He urged participants to try to contribute to ways of tackling disasters to reduce them to the barest minimum.

The NEMA Head pointed out that Ekiti has been having increasing challenges of flooding due to indiscriminate waste disposal. He advised communities to embrace the importance of waste disposal to avert flood disasters.

The General Manager, of Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr Oludare Asaolu, appreciated the State governor, Biodun Oyebanji for being proactive in tackling emergencies in the State. He equally commended NEMA for always being forthcoming in handling disasters in the state.

He appealed to heads of markets in the state to educate their subjects and others on the proper ways of disposing of waste to avoid blocking water channels thereby causing flooding.

The State SEMA assured NEMA of the State’s efforts to construct drains to address the challenges of flooding. He added that mitigating flooding is getting the needed attention, imploring participants to encourage their neighbors to refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste.

The Permanent Secretary, of the Deputy Governor’s Office, Mr. Bayo Opeyemi declared the program open on behalf of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Monisade Afuye.

He explained that with the level at which the State experiences flooding, necessary measures have been put in flood-prone communities to tackle the menace. The Deputy Governor’s representative identified human beings as major contributors to flooding. Against this background, he said the state has continued to organize sensitization programs.

Papers were presented by resource persons on Waste Management, Health implications of indiscriminate waste disposal, Need for Orientation of residents and capped up with contributions from participants.
