The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been alleged to be parading a fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharged certificate.
A popular online newspaper, Premium Times, beaming a searchlight on the claim by Tunji-Ojo, had invoked Freedom of Information (FoI) to ask the Director-General of the NYSC to verify the claim of Tunji-Ojo to the said NYSC certificate.
The latest development is coming barely a week after the exposé on the claim to a degree certificate by the immediate Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji.
The overwhelming incriminating evidence of certificate forgery eventually led to the resignation, on Tuesday, of Nnaji from the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government.
Bent on exposing the rot in public governance, Premium Times, through its Editor-in-Chief/Chief Operating Officer, Musikilu Mojeed, sought a “Freedom of Information (FOI) Request On OLUBUNMI TUNJI-OJO and Verification of Certificate.”
The online news medium organization stated in the letter that it was seeking, among others, clarifications on the authenticity of the NYSC Certificate Tunji-Ojo is laying claim to.
It also requested NYSC to ascertain the year the minister carried out his mandatory one-year national service and the organization where he served, if true.
The letter by the Premium Times read thus:
“The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maitama, Abuja.
“Dear Sir,
“Freedom of Information (FOI) request on OLUBUNMI TUNJI-OJO and verification of certificate
“The above-named person claimed he participated in the National Youth Service Scheme between 28 November, 2019, and 27 November, 2020, as indicated in the attached certificate.
“The certificate was submitted by the individual to the Senate as evidence that he participated in the mandatory national service scheme.
“We like to know if the certificate is genuine.
“If it is genuine, why was it signed in February 2023, more than two years after the individual completed his service?
“Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo became a member of the House of Representatives in June 2019. If the certificate is genuine, why did your organization mobilize him for national service at the same time that he is serving in Nigeria’s parliament full-time?
“If the certificate is genuine, in what organization did he carry out his primary assignment? What was his community development service project? Through which bank was he paid allowances?
“Did he participate in the orientation program signaling the commencement of service and the passing-out parade signaling the completion of service?
“We are requesting this information under the Freedom of Information Act, and we trust that you will revert to us within the period stipulated by the law.”
