The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has been urged to emulate the welfare and motivation packages introduced by his counterparts in other states to boost the morale and productivity of civil servants.
This call was made in a statement issued by Gani Salau, media aide to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, and made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.
Salau described the governor’s attitude toward civil servants as insensitive, crude, and unpatriotic, noting that it contradicts his self-acclaimed image as a civil servant–friendly leader.
According to him, Governor Oyebanji remains the only governor in South-West Nigeria who failed to pay a 13th-month salary to civil servants in December 2025, an action that, he said, did not sit well with workers in the state.
He further noted that the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has consistently paid a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance to civil servants following the increase in fuel prices, a gesture recently adopted by the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.
Salau stressed that such worker-friendly policies should be emulated by the Ekiti State Government to enhance productivity and service delivery.
“Civil servants are the engine room of government. They require motivation and appreciation at all times to ensure optimal performance. Unfortunately, the reverse is the case in Ekiti State, where Governor Oyebanji has continued to deny workers their rightful benefits and entitlements,” he said.
He added that civil servants in Ekiti are still owed leave bonuses dating back to 2015, while retirees have reportedly not received pensions and gratuities since 2016.
According to him, the situation has led to severe hardship, with many retirees struggling to meet basic needs, including healthcare.
Salau, however, urged civil servants and retirees not to lose hope, assuring them that the PDP candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, would prioritise their welfare if elected in the June 20 governorship election.
He called on workers to summon courage and support a change in leadership.
“Dr. Wole Oluyede understands the plight of workers. His parents were teachers, and he is committed to prioritising the welfare of civil servants and retirees.
Outstanding pensions, gratuities, and leave bonuses will be cleared within two years of his administration,” he assured.
The media aide therefore appealed to workers and retirees to vote for the PDP candidate, describing him as a leader genuinely committed to their wellbeing.
