Kindly share this story:
The Supreme Court, on Thursday, dismissed an appeal by the All Progressives Congress candidate in the Rivers State governorship election, Tonye Cole.
Cole asked the apex court to sack Siminalayi Fubara as governor of the state.
He alleged that the election was marred by irregularities and that Fubara did not validly resign his previous position as required by the law, before the election.
Both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal dismissed his case for want of merit.
Similarly, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by Muhammad Sani Yahaya of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) against the election of Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas.
A five-member panel of the court held in a unanimous judgment on Thursday that the NNPP and its candidate failed to establish their case that Kefas was not elected by majority of valid votes.
Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, who read the lead judgment, held that the Court of Appeal was right to have earlier dismissed the appeal on grounds of incomplete records of appeal.
Also, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Sa’idu Umar challenging the election of Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State.
A five-member panel of the court, in a unanimous judgment on Thursday, held that the appellant was without merit.
Justice Tijjani Abubakar, in the lead judgment, held that the appellants failed to prove their claim of non-compliance and proceeded to affirm the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier upheld Aliyu’s election.
