Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has begun consultations and strategic realignments within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The President met behind closed doors with APC governors at the State House in Abuja, in what sources describe as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen party cohesion and electoral preparedness. Although the agenda was not officially disclosed, the meeting followed a similar engagement with Senate leadership less than 24 hours earlier, fuelling speculation of high-level political coordination.

At the same time, the ruling party dismissed allegations that it plans to restrict the sale of nomination forms to select aspirants. Speaking after a National Working Committee meeting, Deputy National Publicity Secretary Durosinmi Meseko described such claims as unfounded.

“Nomination forms for all aspirants seeking offices under the APC are open. There is no restriction whatsoever. Every qualified member of the party is free to obtain forms and participate in the process,” he said.

The party also announced key adjustments to its primary election timetable. Presidential primaries have been shifted to May 23, 2026, while governorship primaries will now take place on May 21. Other activities, including screening and appeals, have also been rescheduled in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Under the revised schedule, the sale of nomination forms will run from April 25 to May 2, with submission closing on May 4. Screening of aspirants is slated between May 6 and May 9, while appeals will be heard shortly after.

The APC confirmed it would adopt both direct and consensus modes of primaries, allowing flexibility in candidate selection as permitted by law.

Meanwhile, indications have emerged that President Tinubu is encouraging governors serving their final terms to contest Senate seats in 2027. The move is seen as a strategy to maintain party loyalty and ensure broader mobilisation during the elections.

One governor, who spoke anonymously, said the plan is aimed at fostering collective responsibility within the party. “Our leader wants it to be a collective responsibility for the party to win and win well,” he stated.

Political analysts say the evolving strategy reflects the APC’s efforts to consolidate its base and manage internal dynamics ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested election cycle.
