Please, share this story:
A chieftain of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator Aminu Tambuwal, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of being behind the crisis bedeviling opposition political parties across Nigeria.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also urged Nasir el-Rufai, to honour the summons issued by the Kaduna State Police Command.
Recall that the Kaduna State Police Command had summoned el-Rufai and six prominent leaders of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.
In a letter by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Uzainu Abdullahi, the Command directed the ADC Chairman in the state to ensure the appearance of el-Rufai and the other party members at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, on September 8, 2025.
However, el-Rufai has threatened to go to court over the summon.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday, the former Sokoto State Governor said the pattern of political disruption in multiple parties showed signs of state involvement.
Tambuwal stated:
“We are all sensible and when you look at what is happening in various political parties in Nigeria today, you don’t need to be told the amount of denial that they, including Tinubu, are involved in destabilising efforts of opposition parties. I’m saying that they are involved in the destabilisation efforts.”
He noted that although he would honour a police invitation if summoned, law enforcement must exercise caution in political matters. According to him, Nigeria’s democracy is being weakened under Tinubu’s leadership.
“I’m shocked that under Tinubu’s watch, Nigeria is being run the way it’s run today,” Tambuwal added, stressing that he was not disappointed because he had opposed Tinubu during the 2023 elections.
Tambuwal urges El-Rufai to honour police summons
Tambuwal also advised el-Rufai to honour the summons issued by the Kaduna State Police Command.
However, Tambuwal maintained that the police cannot curtail freedom of association and assembly as guaranteed by the Constitution.
He said: “Making reference to the constitution of Nigeria which provides for freedom of expression and Assembly, but most of the time the police tries to hide under the Public Order Act which its provisions are inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution to come hard on individuals or groups trying to come together or meet.
“There is no need for a permit from the police for a political party to have a meeting. Even when you write to the police, you notify them. In most cases it has to do with political rallies. In most cases it is for the police to provide security at the rallies and guide the political parties not to have clashes on a particular days and times.
“It is just for guidance and not for the police to say you can’t meet. It wasn’t a rally. We were there on a commiseration visit as a coalition to leaders of the coalition that were attacked by thugs, we were not there for anything, we were there just to commiserate with the leaders in Kaduna.
“I’m a law abiding citizen of this country and whoever is invited by the constituted authority should appear, I will advise my brother and friend, El-Rufai, to attend to the invitation of the police.”
