The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka Zone, has said there would be no going back about the possibility of an impending strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to address critical issues within Nigeria’s university system.
Zonal Coordinator Raphael Amokaha expressed these concerns in a statement on Wednesday in Makurdi
Amokaha criticized the government’s ongoing neglect, stating that while the union had previously demonstrated restraint by avoiding industrial action after suspending the 2022 strike, continued inaction could push them towards another strike.
He highlighted that university staff have not received a salary review in over fifteen years, a situation that reflects poorly on the education sector.
He recounted the frustrations experienced during previous negotiations, emphasizing that the union’s efforts to secure a better working environment and address welfare concerns have been consistently blocked.
Key demands include finalizing the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, releasing withheld salaries, and funding for the revitalization of public universities.
Amokaha concluded, “The ball is now in the government’s court. If we go on strike, the blame lies squarely with the Federal Government.” The union’s future actions depend on the government’s sincerity in addressing these long-standing issues.
