No fewer than 16 persons have been confirmed dead on a multiple auto accident that occurred in Agbowo area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday.
As of the time of filing this report, it was learnt that 17 other victims of the crash sustained varying degrees of injury.
This accident, which occured at the Ajao bus stop, along Iwo Road – Ojo end of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway in the early morning, was said to have been caused by an articulated vehicle which lost it’s breaking system and rammed into other vehicles on its track. The trailers was said to be loaded with building materials, mainly irons.
Spokesman of the Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mayowa Odewo, told journalists that “the accident occured when a trailer carrying iron materials lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles, including a ‘Hummer Bus,’ coming from the North with 18 passengers who are majorly children; it also ran into a Micra and a Honda CR-V car.
“About 16 people died instantly and 17 were injured, while two in the CR-V survived the accident and we’re taken to a nearby hospital.
“Some of the injured were Hausa and they refused to be hospitalised.
He added that the Sector Commander, Rosemary Alo, led him and other operatives on a visit to the scene of the accident.
“Most of the deceased were Hausa people; their remains had been taken to Shasha or Ojoo, while communication had been established with the Seriki Hausa.
“W have also embarked on hospital follow-up. The injured who preferred to be treated were taken to nearby Amdalat Hospital in Agbowo.
“The vehicles involved in the accident have been taken to the Kajorepo Police Station in Jakan area of the expressway by policemen,” he said.
Some residents of the area, however, said it was possible that the ongoing construction work on the Lagos – Ibadan expressway contributed to the heavy traffic being witnessed in the axis of recent, a development that aggravated the mishap.
