An early morning accident that occurred at the Oke-Eleshin area of Amuloko, Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, Ibadan, on Monday, has resulted in multiple fatalities, leaving not less than four persons dead.
The accident, also involving many school children, occurred on the road leading to the local government secretariat.
The road was recently refurbished by the local government chairman, Dr. Kolapo Temitope, with the support of the Chief Executive Officer of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resorts, Chief Dotun Sanusi.
Eyewitnesses said an articulated vehicle and another vehicle carrying carbonated drinks collided, resulting in the loss of lives. Among the victims were a mother and her three children.
It was learned that it took up to three hours before rescue efforts could reach the scene.
Radio stations were heard repeatedly calling on concerned authorities to deploy personnel to the scene right from very early in the morning.
Some residents of the area lamented that the state government had neglected the area, citing poor road conditions and rampant extortion by police operatives.
“The state government has abandoned us. Police officers are more interested in collecting bribes than in ensuring our safety.
“It was the chairman of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resorts, Chief Dotun Sanusi, who recently filled the potholes with sand to make the road manageable,” a resident told journalists.
Others also added that the community’s frustration stemmed from years of neglect, with residents demanding improved infrastructure and effective law enforcement.
