The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Sokoto State governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, over an alleged cash withdrawal to the tune of N189billion made during his tenure as the state helmsman.

Tambuwal, who had previously served as Speaker, House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015, according to sources in EFCC, was being investigated by the anti-corruption commission over alleged financial sleazes during his tenure in Sokoto State.

It was gathered that the former governor, who has been the senator representing Sokoto South in the Senate since 2023, was invited by investigators of the anti-graft agency to shed more light on the ongoing investigations.

A source revealed that the former governor arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 11:30am on Monday to honour the invitation and has remained with the anti-graft agency.

“Former governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State is currently with us (EFCC) and is being quizzed by a team of investigators over alleged fraud perpetrated during his eight-year reign.

“He was invited to come and give some explanations on the ongoing investigations and he honoured the invite today (yesterday). He arrived here at about 11:30am and is still with investigators,” one of the sources told Nigerian Tribune.

Another source said it was unlikely that the former governor would be allowed to go home last night.

Efforts to get EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, to confirm the development proved abortive as he declined comment.

EFCC had in September 2015 questioned Tambuwal’s power to pardon five defendants facing charges for an alleged N15 billion fraud.

However, the commission revealed in 2022 that the former governor looted N189 billion from the state coffers in six years, adding that money was diverted from state accounts to private accounts of some individuals.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El Rufai were said to be mobilizing to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja to perfect the bail of the former Governor
