Ekiti State Police Command has attributed the recent shootings and killings in the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, to cultists and other criminal elements who backed their nafarious activities with robbery.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP, Sunday Abutu, said this at the Command’s Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, while addressing journalists at the parade of twenty-one suspects accused of involvement in various crimes in different parts of the state.
According to Abutu, the syndicates kill people, not just their members but innocent members of the public. “And we have been made to understand that they are drug addicts and drug dealers. For someone to kill even an animal, to some persons it is a difficult task. Not to talk of killing a fellow human being. So something is behind it. Two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the suspects”.
Some suspects were alleged to have been involved in armed robbery, illegal possession of fire arms and murder on 02/06/24, where a gang of armed robbers numbering about eight stormed Oshodi community, Ado-Ekiti, with guns other sophisticated weapons and robbed the residents of their belongings. One Poyi Nambel Boka was allegedly arrested at the scene in possession of one AK-47 rifle when the police arrived on a tip-off. Other gang members were arrested in a hotel in Ado-Ekiti.
On 16/06/24, one of the gang members, David Dashe, aka TOO MUCH, who escaped to Abuja, was trailed and arrested by RRS operatives. Other gang members arrested include Katdul Joshua Sunday,Benjamin Dashe, Selna Luka, and Seidu Marmap. They claimed responsibility for the robbery attacks on innocent citizens in Ado-Ekiti and Ikere-Ekiti. They also confessed to the robbery and murder of a woman, Adewunmi Blessing, on 06/02/2024 and the murder of one Isijola Temitope Opeyemi, a POS operator on 22/05/24.
Items recovered:
– Two AK-47 rifles
– Two locally-made barreta pistols
– Eleven 7.62mm live ammunition
– Four 9mm live ammunition
– Four AK47 magazines
– Two suspected stolen bajaj motorcycles.
Others are cases of conspiracy, stealing, arrest of an alleged jailbreaker, notorious armed robber, attempt to kidnap, murder and cultism. With the arrest of these suspects, the police image maker renewed the commitment of the police to tracking down criminals in the state.
He said Ekiti residents can now sleep with their two eyes closed, but at the same time they should be security conscious and report any suspicious movements within their environments to the police. According to him, with the onslaught on the criminal elements and their arrest normalcy has been restored to the state capital and other parts of the state, while the command will be on the trail of the fleeing suspects.
In a related development, reacting to a question from a journalist that a police officer in the command was alleged of complicity in the crimes in the state, Abutu owned up that “actually the indicted police inspector is currently under investigation and in the force we have our process. We need to properly investigate, and he is undergoing ‘orderly room’ trial. And after this, his case will be treated, and if found guilty, he will be sacked from the force and then charged to court”.
