The Aare Iyalode Agbasaga of Ibadanland, Aare (Mrs.) Bolanle Rasheedat Hassan-Fasan has joined well-meaning Ibadan sons and daughters in condemning in the strongest terms the violent behavior and use of dangerous weapons by hoodlums during this year’s masquerade festival, describing their action as a “desecration of our cultural heritage and a threat to the safety of our people and their properties.”
In a press statement she issued last Thursday copies of which were made available to newsmen, the cultural ambassador, who is also a medical practitioner called on masquerades in Ibadan and their followers to stop every form of violence, destructive tendencies and use of dangerous weapons, stressing that masquerades are an integral part of “our heritage which embody the spirits of our ancestors, deities and supernatural beings, who we hold in very high esteem.”
According to the statement: “Masquerades are used to communicate with the spirit realm, honour the gods, and seek their blessings.
“The festival is more than just a spectacle; it is a symbol of our cultural identity, a celebration of our history, and a testament to the creativity and artistry of our people. The festival brings our communities together, fosters unity, and provides an opportunity for us to reconnect with our roots.
“As we celebrate this festival, I urge all masquerades and their followers to conduct themselves in a peaceful and dignified manner. Let us remember that our cultural heritage is a source of pride and strength, and it is our responsibility to preserve and promote it.
“Let us work together to ensure that our masquerade festival is a celebration of joy, unity, and cultural pride. May this festival bring us closer to our heritage and each other, and may it serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural traditions,” the statement added.
Long live our cultural heritage,
Long live Ibadanland.
