The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to speculations that former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may be planning to join the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said Kwankwaso—like every other Nigerian—is free to make his own political decisions, including joining the APC.
“Kwankwaso is an elite, one of Nigeria’s eminent citizens, and is free, as a political agent, to make decisions for himself—whether to join our party or remain in his party,” Morka said.
When asked if the APC would welcome him, Morka said the party operates an open-door policy and engages all individuals—regardless of background—who share its vision.
“If tomorrow Kwankwaso decides to join APC, we will deal with that and respond as we have responded to others—whether they are governors, members of the National Assembly, or ordinary citizens,” he said, adding that no formal discussions had yet taken place with Kwankwaso.
“Our doors are open. We welcome those who want to join our party, work with us, and support the president in achieving his administration’s objectives.”
On internal matters, Morka addressed the recent resignation of APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, dismissing suggestions of undisclosed reasons behind the move.
“What we disclosed is what we believe and know. It’s not our place to speculate,” he said, noting that consultations were ongoing to replace Ganduje.
On rumors of President Tinubu selecting a new running mate in 2027, Morka said the discussion was premature.
“We have a sitting vice president, and that’s all that matters now. It is entirely the president’s prerogative,” he said.
Reacting to speculation that Kwankwaso could be offered a vice presidential slot in a possible merger, Ladipo Johnson, National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), said the idea wasn’t insulting, but any decision would depend on the collective agreement of the movement.
“It’s not insulting to offer him. Whether he accepts is another matter. It depends on the structure and beliefs of any coalition we’re building,” Johnson said.
He confirmed that discussions have been ongoing across political platforms since the 2023 elections, including informal outreach from the Labour Party, PDP, and even individuals within the APC.
