Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the attack as a grave violation of international law and basic human decency.
In a message released by the Kremlin on Sunday, Putin expressed sympathy to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following the death of Khamenei and members of his family in reported air strikes carried out by Israel and the United States.
“Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” Putin said in a note to Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian released by the Kremlin.
Iranian state media said Khamenei, 86, was killed on Saturday. The strikes, which have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East, have prompted reactions from governments across the region and beyond, raising concerns about the risk of a wider conflict.
Putin paid tribute to Khamenei’s role in shaping ties between Moscow and Tehran, highlighting what he described as the late leader’s influence on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
“In our country, Ayatollah Khamenei will be remembered as an outstanding statesman who made a huge personal contribution to the development of friendly Russian-Iranian relations and bringing them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership,” Putin said.
Over the past decade, Russia and Iran have expanded collaboration in areas ranging from energy and defence to regional diplomacy, particularly in Syria and other conflict zones. Moscow has frequently positioned itself as a strategic partner to Tehran amid mounting Western pressure on the Islamic Republic.
Putin concluded his message by extending solidarity to the Iranian leadership and public during what he characterized as a moment of national mourning.
“I ask you to convey my most sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the Supreme Leader, the government and the entire people of Iran.”
The Kremlin statement comes as global leaders weigh in on the killing, with some governments calling for restraint and others defending the military action. Analysts say the death of Khamenei — who had led Iran since 1989 — marks a pivotal moment for the country’s political and religious establishment and could reshape the balance of power in the region.
