Iran has announced that President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a senior member of the country’s legal council will collectively steer the nation through a transitional period following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
State television reported on Sunday that the three officials will assume responsibility for overseeing the interim process. The announcement was attributed to Mohammad Mokhber, an advisor to Khamenei, who confirmed that the trio has been entrusted with managing the transition.
Earlier, state media confirmed the deaths of the Supreme Leader’s daughter, son-in-law and grandchild amid joint US government–Israeli government strikes.
The Fars News Agency reported on Sunday, citing sources close to the supreme leader’s office, that the deaths were verified after contact was established with informed sources at the leader’s residence. The agency further stated that one of his daughters-in-law was killed in a Saturday morning attack, though no details were provided about the circumstances.
The 86-year-old cleric had led Iran for more than three and a half decades, assuming the role in 1989 after the death of revolutionary founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. During his tenure, Khamenei maintained firm control over the country’s political system, rejecting calls for reform and suppressing dissent.
He remained in power through the 1999 student demonstrations, the 2009 protests over disputed presidential elections and the 2019 unrest that was brutally suppressed. He also weathered the 2022–2023 Woman, Life and Freedom movement sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, as well as last year’s 12-day war against Israel.
