The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified its decision to delay formal charges against the former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, following his recent three-day interrogation.

Despite holding the former governor in custody since February 16, the commission maintains that a “thorough and professional” investigation must be concluded before the matter proceeds to a court of law.

According to sources within the anti-graft agency, the allegations against El-Rufai are “grievous” and require comprehensive forensic verification. While the EFCC granted him administrative bail last Wednesday, his legal troubles intensified as he was immediately taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The EFCC source noted that their investigation remains active and will resume in full once El-Rufai concludes his engagements with the ICPC.

The former governor’s camp has expressed growing concern over his continued detention. His media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, revealed that as of Tuesday, El-Rufai had spent a total of nine days in the custody of both agencies.

Adekeye further noted that the ICPC has yet to respond to bail applications submitted by El-Rufai’s legal team or provide a formal remand order justifying his detention beyond the 48-hour constitutional limit.

As the two primary anti-graft agencies continue their separate inquiries into his tenure, the EFCC has reiterated that it will not “rush to court” until all evidence is fully processed.

For now, the former governor remains at the center of a dual-agency probe that shows no signs of an immediate resolve
