Two leaders of the Labour Party ( LP) are claiming the national championship position of the party following the sack of Julius Abure’s leadership by the Supreme Court last week.

Whereas Senator Nenadi Usman has reportedly been given the mandate to assume the position of chairman in an acting capacity by a factional National Working Committee ( NEC) of the party, the Lamidi Apapa-led faction announced that Lamidi Apapa has stepped in as the national chairman based on the party’s constitution.

Apapa faction said that Senator Nanedi Usman and all those running around under the guise of leading our party are meddlesome interlopers who should not be taken seriously.

But while accepting the position thrust on her by the NEC which has the backing of Peter Obi, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, Nenadi Usman, a former minister under former president Goodluck Jonathan assured the party members and supporters of her commitment to rebuilding and growing the victory party.

In a message of appreciation to members and leaders of the party after Wednesday’s NEC meeting in Abuja, Nenadi assured that a new Labour Party will come out of the crisis now finally settled by the apex court of the land.

She said, “Yesterday marked a significant moment in the life of our great party, the Labour Party, as the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting and Stakeholders’ Interactive Townhall convened in Abuja. It was a gathering filled with purpose and clarity, and I was truly honored to be present among eminent leaders and committed stakeholders including my dear elder brother and grand leader, H.E Mr Peter Obi, and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the leader of NEC, Governor H.E. Dr Alex Otti, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, elected National and State Assembly members, as well as representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), leaders of the Obedient Movement and other patriotic Nigerians,”

She said the meeting was both timely and necessary, as it allowed for collective work to fortify the party’s foundations, build unity among its ranks, and return focus to the enduring mission of building a New Nigeria that works for all.

“It is with deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility that I accept the resolution passed at the NEC meeting, appointing me as the Acting National Chairperson of the Labour Party. I am grateful for the unanimous vote of confidence and for the trust you have placed in me to lead during this transitional period.

“We followed up this important milestone with a formal visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where we presented the Supreme Court judgment affirming the legitimacy of our party’s leadership transition and communicated the outcome of our NEC proceedings.

‘This is more than a procedural step — it is a demonstration of our collective commitment to due process, internal democracy, and the transparent governance that the Nigerian people rightfully expect from us.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all members of the Labour Party, the leadership of the NLC and TUC, the Obedient Movement, and every Nigerian who continues to believe in this movement. To our leader and presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, your steadfastness and integrity continue to inspire millions.

“I reaffirm my commitment to the values and vision that define the Labour Party — a party of the people, for the people. Now is not the time for distraction or division. Now is the time to build, with unity, courage, and a deep love for our country.

“Together, we will continue this journey of hope, and I pledge to serve with diligence, openness, and unwavering focus on our shared goals.

“Let us remain steadfast, engaged, and hopeful. The New Nigeria is not a dream deferred — it is a vision in progress,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for the Lamidi Apapa-led faction of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has revealed why Lamidi Apapa stepped in as the leader of the party.

Arabambi told Vanguard that Apapa stepped in as leader of the party based on the party’s constitution.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday.

He explained that after the Supreme Court removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman, the next person in line was Apapa, who was the Deputy National Chairman (South) and automatically became the acting leader until a national convention was held.

He stated, “Nature abhors a vacuum, and in our case in the Labour Party (LP), there is no vacuum at this stage because our constitution made adequate provision for this eventuality.

“It says, if the position of National Chairman becomes vacant by his removal, resignation, or he becomes incapacitated, Deputy National Chairman takes over.”

He dismissed the idea of setting up a caretaker committee or any interim leadership.

“There is no provision for caretaker committee or interim leadership or any name so-called outside of what our constitution stipulates,” he said.

Arabambi also criticized those who have claimed to be leading the party.

“Senator Nanedi Usman and all those running around under the guise of leading our party are meddlesome interlopers who should not be taken seriously,” he said.

They said the committee would run the party’s affairs until a national convention is held to elect new leaders.

Their decision came shortly after the Supreme Court released a Certified True Copy of its judgment on the leadership crisis between Abure and Usman.
