President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law, just days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the timetable for the 2027 general elections.
The signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at about 5 p.m., with principal officers of the National Assembly in attendance.
The National Assembly of Nigeria had passed the amendment bill on Tuesday, paving the way for presidential assent.
The new amendment has reignited nationwide debate, particularly over provisions relating to the electronic transmission of election results — a contentious issue that has drawn sharp reactions from lawmakers, political parties, civil society organisations and telecom operators.
Observers say the timing of the amendment, coming shortly after INEC unveiled the 2027 election timetable, signals early institutional preparations for the next general elections. However, critics and supporters alike are scrutinising the changes to determine their potential impact on transparency, credibility and electoral dispute resolution.
