Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have abducted passengers along Maiduguri/Kano highway.
Daily Trust reports that the insurgents struck between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari village near Auno, which is along Damaturu highway at about 5:50:pm on Monday.
They reportedly blocked the highway before forcefully taking away some passengers.
The incident left hundreds of travelers and commuters stranded on both ends of the ever-busy road.
They had to return to Benishek and Auno respectively.
“There was an incident between Mannanari and Garin Kuturu where some Boko Haram fighters came out to block the upcoming vehicles and some passengers were abducted.”
“We are not sure of the number as we speak but certainly there was an abduction on Monday evening.”
Residents narrated how many commercial drivers took refuge in their community momentarily when the insurgents were operating between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari villages.
“They came out with three wheelbarrow and I believe they were looking for food stuff. We don’t know how many people abducted but some commercial drivers came back and later returned to Maiduguri before reinforcement of military arrived.”
A passenger, who craved anonymity, said he alongside others were stranded for hours.
“We were heading for Kano from Maiduguri when the driver got hinted about the attack and took a detour,” he told the newspaper.
“We have been waiting for the military to clear the road but we don’t know when. We are stranded here.”
Attack, execute three Christians, CAN Laments
Also, it was learnt last Thursday that the terrorists stopped the bus near Kamuya village in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State and whisked away four persons identified as Christians.
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have executed three passengers in a commercial bus, who were identified as being of the Christian faith in Yobe State.
SaharaReporters learnt on Thursday that the terrorists stopped the bus near Kamuya village in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State and whisked away four persons identified as Christians.
Three of them were later executed by the terrorists in a nearby bush. The whereabouts of the fourth person is not known as of the time of this report.
Sources in Kamuya village told SaharaReporters that the executed christians were travelling from Biu in Borno State to Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, when the tragic incident happened.
“At about 9am, they stopped the bus a few kilometers away from Kamuya village and led four passengers into the bush as we watched from afar. We immediately scampered to leave the area.
“It is really sad that they killed three of the abducted, as we later saw on Facebook. May God expose these terrorists and bring an end to their nefarious activities,” a source who pleaded anonymity said.
The Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Yobe State, Reverend Ibrahim Abako also confirmed the incident in a statement.
“I want to inform you that, we are not happy. Very sad news! On behalf of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Yobe State chapter, we condemn in totality, the killing of three Christian youths along Damaturu-Biu Federal Highway.
“CAN is urging the state government, military and the police to take measures to protect the citizens regardless of their religious affiliation,” Abako stated.
When contacted on the incident, the spokesperson for the police in Yobe State, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim declined to confirm the matter. He however told SaharaReporters to direct the question to the military.
On his part, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Major Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, did not answer repeated calls, just as he did not reply to a text message sent to his mobile phone.
Unknown gunmen
In another development two policemen and a security officer were killed by unknown gunmen in Akabo village, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State early Tuesday morning.
The attack occurred around 6 a.m., according to the Imo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Henry Okoye.
SP Okoye confirmed the incident, stating that the officers were ambushed and killed by the assailants.
The attack has further heightened concerns about the security situation in the southeast state.
The Imo State Police Command said it has launched an investigation into the incident and is working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
SP Okoye assured the public that efforts are being intensified to ensure the culprits are brought to justice and to prevent future occurrences of such violent attacks.”
