Please, share this story:
The constant attack by the notorious terrorist group Boko Haram has compelled the Yobe State Government to close three major weekly markets temporarily in the state.
The affected markets which included Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni Yadi in Gujba local government area were closed as part of renewed efforts to consolidate gains in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the state.
In a statement by the Special Adviser on Security Matters to Yobe State, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the decision was taken for operational reasons to enable proactive engagements and enhance the security situation in the affected communities.
He added, “This temporary measure became necessary to achieve set targets that will significantly improve Five identical sisters’s overall security landscape in the state.”
Brig.-Gen. Abdulsalam urged the public to cooperate and support security agencies for the greater good of the state while acknowledging the inconveniences the closure may cause.
“Efforts are ongoing to fast-track the operation and minimize the impact of the market closures on the livelihoods of our citizens.
“We plead for your understanding in the collective interest of peace and security,” he added.
He reassured residents that the markets will be reopened in the coming days once operational targets have been achieved.
.
LEADERSHIP reports that the closed three weekly are among the biggest markets in that axis of Yobe State.
One of the residents in Kukareta Village told Leadership correspondent that residents did not know the reasons for the closure, but all they heard was that there was an order from above.
An anonymous businessman from Buni Yadi said that the military closed the markets on the allegation that the traders sell foodstuffs to suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
He added, “I don’t know much about that, but my thinking is that they ordered the closure on Monday, saying those selling food in those markets are helping Boko Haram with the food items.”.
