The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has officially stepped down from his position, thus bringing an abrupt end to a tenure repeatedly shaken by crisis, court orders, and internal rebellion.
The resignation of Ganduje
who assumed the APC leadership in August 2023 and formally stepped down on June 27, 2025, was gathered had been expected due to a budding internal crisis prompting repeated calls for restructuring of the party’s leadership.
Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, tendered his resignation on Thursday, citing health concerns as the major reason for his decision to step down, but party sources revealed that mounting political pressure,e which has worsened his public image and allegations of financial misconduct were key forces behind his exit.
While Ganduje stated his decision was personal, several APC members, particularly from the FCT and North Central zones, had earlier raised concerns about exorbitant ticket fees and excessive financial demands allegedly imposed by his office during internal party processes. These complaints led to public protests and calls for reform.
Ganduje’s leadership had been embattled by legal cases instituted by the Kano State Government, which accused him of financial embezzlement while in office as governor of the state.
Also, the Kano State branch of APC took him to a Kano High Court in 2024, which issued an order barring him from parading himself as a party member. Although a separate Federal High Court in Abuja later struck out a case seeking his removal, the cumulative legal assaults underscored the factionalism plaguing the APC under his watch.
Dr. Ganduje governed Kano State from 2015 to 2023, a period marked by both infrastructure expansion and controversies over integrity and transparency. His chairmanship of the ruling party carried over these reputational burdens into national politics.
Ganduge, who was nominated for the position by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, succeeded former Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi
As of now, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) is yet to issue an official statement confirming the resignation, but the Acting National Chairman is expected to come from the North in compliance with the party’s constitution.
