The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a fresh turn, as the faction led by Tanimu Turaki has strongly reacted to the takeover of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja by a rival camp aligned with Nyesom Wike.
The dispute centres on the control of the PDP’s headquarters at Wadata Plaza, which was recently unsealed by the Nigeria Police Force and handed over to the faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
The development follows months of intense internal wrangling that began in November 2025, when a leadership crisis split the party into opposing camps. The Turaki-led faction, backed by Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, has been locked in a prolonged battle with the rival group.
In March, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Wike-aligned faction, nullifying the Ibadan convention organised by the opposing camp. Acting on the ruling, the police unsealed the party’s national offices at Wadata Plaza and Legacy House in Maitama, restoring access to the Mohammed-led leadership.
In a statement, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the move was carried out in compliance with court orders and praised the police for professionalism and respect for due process.
The group also warned against any attempt to disrupt activities at the secretariat and called on aggrieved members to embrace unity.
It further commended Wike for his role during the crisis, describing his support as instrumental to the party’s current position.
Turaki Faction Fires Back
Reacting, the spokesperson of the Turaki-led camp, Ini Ememobong, rejected the development, accusing national institutions of acting in a partisan manner.
He argued that the court ruling relied upon had already been appealed, insisting that no valid subsisting order justified the takeover of the secretariat.
“That order has been appealed, and the police were duly served. This is part of a pattern of partisan use of state institutions,” Ememobong said.
The faction also alleged widespread institutional bias, claiming that key arms of government, including the judiciary, had been “weaponised” in the political dispute.
In a separate statement, the group condemned the role of the police, accusing the force of aiding what it described as an unlawful occupation of the party’s headquarters despite ongoing legal proceedings.
“It is most shameful that those entrusted with protecting the law are the ones disobeying it,” the statement said.
Call for Calm Amid Rising Tension
Despite its strong objections, the Turaki faction urged its supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while it continues to challenge the development through legal means.
“We will pursue all lawful avenues to protect the rights of genuine PDP members,” the group stated.
It also expressed optimism that the courts would eventually resolve the dispute, restoring what it described as true democratic order within the party.
The latest confrontation underscores the deepening fragmentation within the PDP, raising fresh concerns about the party’s unity and stability ahead of future elections.
