Innocent Jude Ike, the overall best graduating student of Federal University Wukari in Taraba State, has attributed his academic success to the sacrifices and struggles of his mother.
Ike, who graduated with a first-class degree and an outstanding cumulative grade point average of 4.92 out of 5.00, explained that his determination to uplift his family kept him focused throughout his university years.
According to him, witnessing his mother’s efforts to support the family instilled a strong sense of responsibility that pushed him to remain disciplined in his studies.
He noted that maintaining structured study hours, engaging in active learning, and organising tutorial sessions for fellow students were some of the strategies that contributed to his academic success.
The graduate explained that teaching others during tutorials helped him deepen his understanding of complex topics, making it one of his most effective learning methods.
Despite his academic commitments, Ike also held several leadership roles within the university, including Welfare Director, President of the Mathematics Students Association, and Chairman of the departmental Electoral Committee.
He said balancing leadership responsibilities with academics required careful time management and constant focus on his long-term goals.
Ike also recounted a major setback during his undergraduate years when a fire outbreak destroyed his family’s residence, leaving them with almost nothing.
The incident forced him to take on jobs, including teaching computer classes and private lessons, while continuing his studies.
Despite the hardship, he remained determined not to allow the situation derail his academic ambitions.
After completing the National Youth Service Corps programme, Ike said he decided to continue his academic journey and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in mathematics at the same university, with a focus on mathematical modelling.
He expressed interest in advancing his research internationally in the future, noting that mathematical modelling can help address real-world challenges in areas such as health, science and environmental systems.
Offering advice to students struggling academically, Ike encouraged them to remain disciplined, choose their activities wisely and remain committed to excellence.
