At least three persons are feared dead in the ongoing ward congress of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday.

This comes as some thugs, allegedly members of the Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), reportedly invaded a stakeholders’ meeting at the party’s state secretariat on Tuesday and beat the party’s state chairman and other executives.

It was alleged that the party secretariat, located not far from the NURTW office, was stormed by the thugs while the stakeholders’ meeting was in progress, causing panic and commotion.

The incident in Idanre Local Government occurred on Wednesday when political thugs suspected to be members of the NURTW invaded the venue of the ward congress, reportedly shooting sporadically into the air.

According to eyewitnesses, the thugs disrupted the exercise, leading to multiple injuries and extensive property damage. It was gathered that one of the casualties is a family member of a prominent APC chieftain in the local government.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Jimoh Abayomi, was not immediately available for comment when contacted.

However, the exact cause of the violence remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

Mr. Ade Adetimehin, the Ondo State APC Chairman, alleged that the state government sent the thugs to disrupt the meeting. He claimed that he and other party members were beaten and that their phones were seized by the attackers.

The APC chairman said he had reported the development to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police for his safety.

The state government has yet to react to Adetimehin’s allegations.
