Every thriving society is built on the invisible strength of its workers — the teachers shaping futures, the nurses healing hearts, the artisans bringing dreams to life, and the civil servants keeping the machinery of government in motion. Today, we pause to recognize not just what you do but the spirit with which you do it.
I, therefore, extend genuine congratulations to the hardworking people of Ekiti and Nigeria at large on this year’s Workers’ Day celebration.
I believe that it is both unjust and unfortunate that our nation’s workers, despite their vital contributions, continue to grapple with economic hardship. While the payment of an N70,000 minimum wage in some states is a step forward on paper, the reality of many workers remains that of financial stress and unmet needs largely due to rising inflation and the failure to prioritize their welfare beyond salaries.
In Ekiti, the civil service has long been underutilized, its vast potential squandered by leaders who have not fully appreciated the engine room that workers truly represent. My vision is one where the workforce is empowered, valued, and given room to thrive as key partners in governance.
As we mark this day under the theme: “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work,” it is imperative that we begin to embrace innovation and technology not only to enhance workplace safety but also to boost efficiency and improve the overall well-being of our workers.
May God continue to uphold, protect, and reward every worker with fulfillment, dignity, and peace.
Signed,
Otunba Peter Obafemi
