Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has opened up about the words of encouragement he received from his wife, Chioma Rowland Adeleke, following his second loss at the Grammy Awards.

Chioma told Davido to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat, we are outside.

Davido’s track “With You,” featuring Omah Lay, was nominated in the Best African Music Performance category but failed to secure the award. The honour eventually went to South African singer Tyla for her song “Push 2 Start.”

The category saw strong Nigerian representation, with nominations for Burna Boy (Love), Davido (With You featuring Omah Lay), and a collaborative entry by Ayra Starr and Wizkid (Gimme Dat). Also nominated were “Hope & Love” by Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin.

Despite the dominance of African, particularly Nigerian, artists in the category, none from Nigeria emerged victorious.

Sharing his experience on Instagram, Davido revealed that he initially suggested skipping the post-award after-party following the loss.

According to the singer, his wife disagreed and encouraged him to step out regardless. Posting photos from their outing, Davido quoted Chioma as saying:
“I said, ‘Baby, listen, we lost again. Let’s not go.’ She replied, ‘Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We’re outside.”
