The Presidency has described as untrue the rumor made around on Monday morning that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, of his post.

Reports that had gone viral, emanating particularly from social media platforms, claimed that Yakubu had been sacked and replaced with Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.

Reacting, O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Digital Media and New Media, took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to address the claims.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra wrote.

He added, “Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source.”

Mahmood Yakubu was appointed as INEC Chairman by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015.
