President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency to arrest deepening insecurity which has become a national embarrassment.
The President also directed the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces to embark on an immediate large-scale recruitment to confront the country’s deepening insecurity.
In a statement released from the State House, the President ordered the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers, raising the total number of approved new intakes to 50,000, in what he described as an urgent national response to terrorist attacks, kidnappings and violent crime.
Tinubu also authorised the temporary use of National Youth Service Corps orientation camps as short-term police training facilities, saying the move became necessary after reviewing recent security breaches in several states.
The President said: “This is a national emergency. We are deploying more boots on the ground to secure communities, protect schools, and dismantle the networks of terror threatening our country.”
The directive is expected to accelerate police presence in rural and high-risk areas, especially in regions hit by a recent wave of abductions, including Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states.
According to the statement, officers currently serving as VIP escorts will undergo crash retraining and be reassigned to frontline security operations.
Tinubu commended security agencies for the rescue of the abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and worshippers in Kwara, stressing that the Federal Government would intensify search efforts for other victims still in captivity.
He insisted that no armed group will be allowed to undermine the nation’s peace.
“There will be no hiding place for agents of evil,” the President warned.
