Popular rights lawyer, Monday Onyeachi Ubani, has stated why embattled Kogi senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, cannot resume in the upper legislative chamber for now.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended from the Senate for six months over alleged unruly behaviours, has been making frantic efforts for her return.
Ubani, speaking on 32FM, an Ibadan, Oyo State-based radio station, on Saturday, said the senator was fighting her cause wrong from the point of law.
Apart from the fact that there are cases in courts over the matter, he averred, “there is an allegation of sexual harassment against the Senate President that has not been proved till now.”
When queried if he was a counsel in the case, Ubani, SAN, owned up that he was not, but disclosed that he was a legal consultant to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“I am not; but I am a consultant on legal matters to the Senate President. And as a lawyer, I know the details of the case,” he said.
Ubani also spoke on the lingering crisis between Dangote Refinery and petroleum labour unions, the two sides had their peculiar wrong positions.
“I don’t know the resolution they reached. But Dangote is a private company which can sign agreements with it’s employees.
“It’s the National Union of Petroleum Engineers and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) that is fighting that Dangote’s workers have to be their members. I am looking at it from both sides.
“Workers have terms and conditions that they signed with employers before they get employed. They have to abide by them, if they don’t want to lose their jobs.
“But NUPENG can rely on a lawyer with regards to their association too.
“I think someone has to go to court to challenge any agreement that forbids them from joining a union or vice versa. If you go to court, though, you might lose your job. The issue of locus standi also arises.
“It should be voluntary for anyone to join a union or it activities. But if you are in the same profession and wants to act contrary, they can frustrate you,’ he said.
