The All Progressives Congress (APC) States Assembly Forum (ASAF), has thrown its weight behind the National Working Committee (NWC) declaration of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the leader of the party in the state following his recent defection from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC.
The states Assembly Forum comprises of all elected and serving members.
Gov Fubara’s defection has fuelled controversy with the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of flouting an agreement reportedly reached and signed in the presence of President Bola Tinubu, prior to the lifting of his suspension that followed the earlier six-month emergency rule in the state.
At the weekend, Wike came under attack from the APC NWC, which insisted that the governor, like in other states is the leader of the party in his state. The NWC also maintained that the FCT minister is not a member of the APC and therefore cannot meddle in the affairs of the party from outside.
The matter, however, escalated when Wike threatened the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, over his condemnation of the position of the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, who stated that Governor Fubara cannot be recognised as the APC leader in Rivers State. Giadom also argued that the governor cannot seek re-election on the APC platform without the support of the FCT minister.
Declaring its support for the Rivers State governor, ASAF, in a statement issued from kaduna on Wednesday, noted that the APC has well-structured rules that clearly define the party’s leadership structure.
In the statement signed by its Director-General, Ambassador Fubara Dagogo, the forum also passed a vote of confidence on the party’s NWC, led by Professor Nentawe Yilwatda. It described the statements by the National Chairman and National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, as explicit and consistent with the provisions of the APC constitution.
“Our great party is well structured and has a clear constitution that sets out the party’s leadership structure. So, there is no need for any dispute over the leadership of the APC in Rivers State. Our NWC has addressed that, and we in ASAF believe that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is on the right track as the uncontested leader of our party in his state,” the statement said.
ASAF therefore urged both Governor Fubara and the APC NWC to remain focused and to shrug off what it described as attempts by non-party members to cause division within the Rivers APC and the national leadership. It added that the governor should sustain his current performance, which it said has earned him the support of the people of Rivers State.
The forum further cautioned non-APC members to refrain from delving into the ruling party’s internal affairs. It also warned its members in various states to be cautious of the activities of non-APC members who, it alleged, may attempt to infiltrate the party to destabilise it and cause confusion, as they did in opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We urge our members to be vigilant because there is envy from members of the disorganised opposition parties who may try hard to infiltrate the APC and cause confusion aimed at destroying our unity, under the pretext of supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election project in 2027.
“We also warn that non-APC members should stay clear of our party. We have observed that they are not happy with the unity in the APC, which has led to a myriad of opposition defections. They may have mobilised to instigate division and cause confusion in our party ahead of the 2027 elections, while pretending to support the re-election of our president.
“Our joy, however, is that the APC is a party built on a very strong foundation, with the solid commitment of the current NWC and stakeholders, and cannot be infiltrated to create crisis and destruction as they did in their own parties,” the statement added.
