A Nigerian-born Afrofusion artist, known as Soga (Adesoga), is igniting a powerful cultural movement aimed at restoring the depth, pride, and global relevance of Yoruba spirituality for a new generation.

Blending music, tradition, and philosophy, Adesoga is championing what he calls the “Orí Renaissance”—a bold initiative focused on reviving the Yoruba concept of Orí, which represents inner consciousness, destiny, and spiritual identity. Through this movement, he is challenging long-standing misconceptions that have reduced African spirituality to stereotypes.

“At the foundation of our tradition is the self—before anything else, there is Orí,” he emphasizes through his work.
From Heritage to Global Movement
Deeply rooted in tradition, Adesoga’s journey is shaped by a strong cultural lineage. He is the son of Araba Olatunji Somorin and Oluwakemi Somorin, founders of the Ketus Institute, an organisation promoting Yoruba knowledge across North America and the Caribbean.

With a solid grounding in language and tradition, Adesoga has transformed his heritage into a global cultural force—bridging continents and reconnecting the African diaspora with their ancestral identity.

Taking Yoruba Culture to the World Stage
In March 2026, Adesoga expanded his influence as a creative director at cultural showcases hosted by the University of the West Indies. The exhibitions featured Nigerian artifacts, traditional attire, and symbolic elements of Yoruba heritage, drawing attention to their enduring relevance.

One of the highlights was a detailed presentation of the Egungun masquerade tradition, tracing its cultural impact from Yoruba land to Caribbean Carnival and other diaspora expressions.

Beyond exhibitions, his workshops have attracted participants from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, covering topics such as:
Ancestral herbs and plant medicine
Traditional healing systems
Indigenous divination practices
Music as a Cultural Weapon
At the heart of Adesoga’s mission is music. Using Afrofusion as his platform, he weaves storytelling with deep philosophical themes, making complex cultural ideas accessible to a global audience.

His unique style is already gaining recognition, drawing attention from international figures such as SZA and Nigerian star Boy Spyce.

A Symbol of Identity and Responsibility
A defining feature of Adesoga’s identity is the sacred headpiece he wears—an emblem of his lineage and spiritual responsibility. Representing Orí, it symbolizes his role as both a cultural custodian and a bridge reconnecting lost heritage across the African diaspora.

Redefining Spiritual Understanding
Despite its spiritual foundation, the Orí Renaissance is not positioned against religion. Instead, it seeks to deepen understanding by correcting misinterpretations shaped by colonial narratives. Adesoga’s message is clear: true spirituality begins with self-awareness.

The Rise of a “Babalawo Singer”
Looking ahead, Adesoga envisions a new identity for himself—a “Babalawo singer”—an artist who merges ancient wisdom with modern sound to educate, inspire, and transform.

As global conversations around African identity continue to grow, Adesoga stands at the forefront of a cultural awakening—one that is not only preserving tradition but boldly redefining it for the future.
