The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the steady erosion of public confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary, blaming the trend on increasing politicisation and the lack of accountability for public officials.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, raised the alarm while reacting to recent comments by the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Communications and Orientation, Sunday Dare.
Dare had stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not afraid of audits covering its 11 years in power, adding that many of Nigeria’s challenges predated the current administration.
While Dare maintained that reforms take time to yield results and cited progress in democratic institutions despite persistent challenges, Ememobong argued that macroeconomic indicators alone fail to reflect the lived realities of ordinary Nigerians.
Addressing Dare directly, Ememobong said discussions about economic growth must be grounded in the daily experiences of citizens.
“When you speak about GDP, you must relate it to the lives of everyday Nigerians,” he said. “When you meet and interact with people on the streets, do they reflect the economy you are describing?” He further lamented what he called the growing loss of confidence in the judicial system.
“People no longer trust the judiciary. There is increasing politicisation of the judiciary and, at the same time, the judicialisation of politics. There is also a clear absence of consequences for wrongdoing. These are the realities undermining democratic consolidation in our country,” Ememobong stated.
The PDP spokesman insisted that until governance reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens and restore faith in public institutions, public skepticism will continue to deepen.
