Against all odds, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elective national convention begins today in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The convention, scheduled for today and tomorrow at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, is expected to attract party chieftains, aspirants, stakeholders and observers from across the country.

Party chieftains began to arrive the ancient city since Wednesday, even as the Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Umar Fintiri, announced that the convention would proceed as scheduled in Ibadan at the end of a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Thursday night,

The meeting, held at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge, had in attendance Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and other party leaders.

It was gathered that the party resolved to go ahead with the convention after the meeting and directed members from across the 36 states and the FCT to proceed to Ibadan for accreditation.

Accreditation began around noon on Friday at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Delegates from neighbouring states were the first to be attended to, while officials awaited others arriving from the far northern parts of the country.

Confirming the arrival of delegates, the PDP spokesperson in Oyo State, Michael Ogunsina, told Saturday Tribune: “All is set for the national convention of our party. Delegates have started arriving from the six geopolitical zones. Accreditation has commenced. With all necessary arrangements in place, the convention will go on as scheduled.”

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has declared its readiness to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention scheduled to hold on Saturday, November 15, and Sunday, November 16, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adewale Osifeso, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), who noted that the Command had put in place a comprehensive security arrangement ahead of the two-day event.

According to the statement, the convention was expected to attract high-profile political actors, international observers, media representatives, and thousands of party members from across the country.

“In anticipation of the massive turnout,” Osifeso said, ” the Command—working in collaboration with other security agencies—has developed a ‘ robust security strategy.’

“The measures include intensified patrols, enhanced surveillance operations, and intelligence-driven stop-and-search activities across the state.

“Security presence will be heightened at major entry and exit points, while critical public infrastructure such as parks, train stations and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport will be closely monitored.”

The Command advised residents to consider alternative routes around the Adamasingba axis throughout the convention period to ease movement and prevent congestion.

Osifeso warned against any form of public disturbance, including unauthorised rallies or gatherings before, during, or after the event, stressing that the police would not hesitate to maintain order where necessary.
