The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, has arrested 39 suspected terrorists who reportedly fled Sokoto State following recent airstrikes in Nigeria’s North-West.
The suspects were among 100 individuals paraded by the agency across different parts of Ondo State. Speaking during the parade, the State Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said the 39 suspects claimed they escaped heightened security operations in northern Nigeria and relocated to forest areas within the state.
According to Adeleye, the suspects were intercepted shortly after moving into the forests, raising security concerns over the sudden influx of unfamiliar persons into the region.
“A few days ago, we arrested 39 individuals who all claimed that due to intense pressure on them in the northern part of the country, they decided to relocate into our forest areas,” Adeleye said.
He noted that the suspects were currently undergoing profiling, adding that those found with incriminating items would be prosecuted, while others may be handed over to relevant authorities after investigations.
“The government has made its position clear. Anyone intending to stay in forest zones must obtain proper authorisation. This sudden movement into our forests raises serious security questions, which we are still addressing,” he added.
The Amotekun commander also disclosed that collaboration between border patrol teams from Ondo and neighbouring states—including Ekiti, Osun and Ogun—had strengthened intelligence gathering and arrests. He revealed that some suspects were apprehended outside the state and brought back to Ondo for further investigation.
