Please, share this story:
The absence of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s photograph on a banner displayed at the North-East Zonal Public Hearing on the amendment of the party’s constitution reportedly triggered confusion and outrage among party stakeholders.
The omission provoked angry reactions from delegates and party leaders, prompting the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, to openly condemn what he described as a disrespectful slight against the Vice President.
The banner prepared for the event reportedly featured images of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the five All Progressives Congress (APC) governors from the North-East zone, and the party’s National Legal Adviser. However, Vice President Shettima’s photograph was conspicuously missing, despite his position as Nigeria’s number two citizen and a leading APC figure from the region.
Observers noted that the incident was not unprecedented, recalling a similar omission at an APC event in Gombe State last year. That earlier incident reportedly degenerated into a fracas and led to the abrupt termination of the meeting.
Addressing participants at the Borno event, Speaker Lawan, Nigeria’s longest-serving Speaker, expressed deep concern over the development, warning that such actions could generate unnecessary tension within the party.
“Why would the Vice President’s picture be excluded from the banner? This same issue caused chaos in Gombe, and now it is happening again in Borno. I do not understand the organisers’ motive, but this is unacceptable,” Lawan said.
He further questioned the rationale behind the omission, stating, “How can the image of a sitting Vice President—who hails from Borno State and represents the North-East zone—be left out?”
Lawan’s remarks were greeted with loud applause from attendees, underscoring widespread disapproval of the omission among party members present at the event.
