The Wole Oluyede Campaign Council has accused the administration of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, of mounting undue pressure on the Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to compromise its long-standing and honourable commitment to fair and objective reporting. According to the council, the government is intentionally denying journalists their basic entitlements in a calculated effort to suppress the truth.

The union had in a press release published in some national newspapers in January this year, lamented the poor welfare conditions of journalists working in Ekiti, particularly issues relating to remuneration, working environment, and access to basic entitlements—and therefore appealed to Governor Oyebanji to grant the leadership of the union an audience to address these concerns.

The Campaign Council, speaking through its Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, in a press statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, claimed that Governor Oyebanji was embarrassed and ordered the union to retract the publication.

The government felt embarrassed when the journalists exposed their harrowing, long-standing experiences to the public.

The Campaign Council gathered that the government deliberately decided not to care about the welfare of the journalists in a calculated attempt to compel them to launder its image.

But the union whose professional ethics demand truthfulness and factual reporting rather than the dissemination of falsehoods, has found little or nothing under the Oyebanji administration to use to launder image of the administration.

According to Adelusi, there are no visible projects, tangible achievements, or notable development initiatives worthy of positive reporting beyond official government press statements.

He said “the NUJ’s refusal to compromise its integrity or ‘wine and dine’ with corruption has reportedly earned it the displeasure of the state government. As a result, the administration has allegedly shown little concern for the welfare of journalists, particularly in areas such as remuneration, working conditions, and access to basic entitlements.”

The Oluyede Campaign Council questioned the motive behind Governor Oyebanji’s actions, wondering why the governor would seek to cloak himself in borrowed glory, undermine press freedom, and compel journalists to propagate untruths.

The Campaign Council described the Oyebanji administration as an aberration, accusing it of abandoning its social and moral responsibilities to the people of Ekiti State since inception, while focusing instead on securing second-term endorsements.

It alleged that despite receiving substantial monthly federal allocations, the government has made no visible impact on the state or on the lives of ordinary citizens, except for a small circle of cronies and political godfathers.

According to the Campaign Council, this has resulted in widespread hardship among the populace.

“This,” the Campaign Council said, “is the true scorecard of a governor desperately seeking re-election.”

Rather than concentrating on governance, the Campaign Council alleged that Governor Oyebanji has been moving from one political godfather to another, both within and outside the state, soliciting endorsements. It further claimed that public funds are being used to sponsor distractions against formidable opponents, while thugs have been empowered to intimidate opposition parties and their supporters across the state.

Questioning whether the NUJ could betray its conscience, Adelusi asked rhetorically if the union would “see black and call it white” when it has not descended into what he described as a pit of dishonour.

The Campaign Council noted that past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations in Ekiti State were known for diligence and honourable leadership. It expressed confidence that a PDP government under Dr Wole Oluyede would build on those legacies if elected by the people, heralding what it described as a new dawn for the state.

The Campaign Council assured the people of Ekiti State that Dr Oluyede remains undeterred by what it termed man-made obstacles, expressing confidence that divine intervention would soon clear the path. Citing the popular saying that “he who laughs last laughs best,” the council declared that Dr Oluyede is divinely positioned to emerge victorious.
