A Nigerian national, Esosa Eguakin, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting two women on commuter trains travelling from Hampshire to London.

Eguakin was sentenced on Tuesday, February 10, at Guildford Crown Court, following an investigation conducted by the British Transport Police (BTP).

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), restricting him from sitting or standing next to or directly opposite lone women, among other conditions aimed at preventing further offences.

The court heard that on August 21 last year, Eguakin boarded a train service from Fratton to London Waterloo station shortly after 7:15 a.m., where he deliberately sat behind a woman in her 30s and sexually assaulted her during the journey.

A second incident occurred on October 6 aboard an early morning service from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When confronted by the victim, Eguakin claimed he was attempting to retrieve a phone he had dropped but refused to move away, prompting intervention by an off-duty police officer.

The officer escorted him off the train at Woking station, arrested him, and detained him until additional officers arrived to take him into custody.

Subsequent investigations linked him to both incidents, leading to two counts of sexual assault.

Detective Constable David Stewart described the offender’s conduct as predatory and distressing for the victims, commending the women for supporting the investigation and praising the swift response of the off-duty officer which prevented further harm.

Police authorities urged members of the public to report sexual offences occurring on trains or at railway stations, emphasising that reports can be made by texting 61016 or calling emergency services in urgent situations.
