Please, share this story:

President Bola Tinubu has insisted that the country is not experiencing genocide against any religion.

The President said his government has upheld the ethos of religious tolerance, since it’s inception.

He gave the indication on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @BolaAhmedTinubu, in a post at the weekend.

“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.

“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.

“Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.

“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths,” the President said.

Recall that there has been the controversy over whether or not the insecurity in the country had been targeted at annihilation of Christians.

While the government of the United States of America (USA), under Donald Trump, has reportedly harped on this allegation, government officials, even within the US government, have been trying to clarify issues.

The statement from the Nigerian president is believed to be the uppermost official stand on the matter.

On Friday the United States President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over what he describes as the existential threat that Christians are facing in Nigeria.

The President made this known in a post on X on Friday. He said Christians are being slaughtered by killed radical Islamists .

Out of the 4,476 of Christians killed worldwide, he said 4000 were killed in Nigeria making it a country of particular concern.

He asked Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the crisis immediately, potentially leading to U.S. sanctions.

While Nigerian officials attribute the violence to ethnic and resource conflicts, advocates highlight the disproportionate targeting of Christians in the north and Middle Belt.

He said United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. “We stand ready, willing and able to save our Great Christian population around the world.”
