Nigeria’s Super Eagles clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Tunisia on Saturday, sealing their place in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16 in a tense, back-and-forth encounter.
The match burst into life just before halftime, as Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, powering home a pinpoint cross from Ademola Lookman to settle the Nigerian nerves.
The momentum carried straight into the second half. Captain Wilfried Ndidi doubled the lead five minutes after the restart, rising to meet another superb delivery from the influential Lookman. The winger then turned scorer in the 70th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack initiated by Osimhen to seemingly put the game out of reach at 3-0.
However, Tunisia mounted a furious late comeback. Montassar Talbi pulled one back with a header in the 74th minute, before a handball by defender Bright Osayi-Samuel conceded a penalty, calmly converted by Aïssa Laïdouni in the 87th minute. A tense finale ensued, but Nigeria held firm to secure the vital three points.
The win confirms Nigeria’s progression to the knockout stages, where they will face Uganda in the Round of 16 this Tuesday at 5 PM, riding a wave of confidence after this character-testing victory.
